The remarkable Scheepvaarthuis, which is a national monument since 1974, is a beautiful example of the expressive Amsterdam School style. Famous architects, sculptors and stained glass artists expressed the Dutch shipping history and its related symbolism in the most expensive materials and exquisite details. Therefore, the Scheepvaarthuis is a "Gesamtkunstwerk" in which the history of the rich Amsterdam shipping life is shown in a 'architecture parlante' (graphic novel in architecture).
