Lunchroom exhibition by Limo Hair

From Friday February through 29 april 2024, Museum Het Schip will be showing the exhibition "Strange Symbols from the Homes I Want to Live in" by Limo Hair in its lunchroom.

Over the past three months, Limo Hair has walked every street in de Baarsjes. She has carefully surveyed every one of the neighbourhood’s buildings and has assembled a vast collection of symbols drawn from their ornamental flourishes anf forms. While conducting this research, the artist found out that she would be losing her home. Faced with the most wretched of instabilities, she adopted many of these symbols as talismans. She obsessed over them, allowing them to guide her thought and focus her hope. They provided constancy at a time when all else seemed to melt into air. She ritualistically reproduced the most significant of these symbols, and many of these works are here on display. Strange Symbols from the Homes I Want to Live In is a series of silk textile works. The symbols are reproduced through a range of traditional and homely techniques, such as patchwork, applique, and quilting. They are made from recycled materials and dyed naturally.

Limo is a craftswoman from Miami, at home in Amsterdam. Her practice revolves around a ritualistic and historically informed textile craft. Silk is her dominant medium. Collecting second-hand materials, natural dying, and patchworking form the base of her work. These pieces are then transformed into textile art, costume, and domestic craft. Her work heavily draws on the symbolism of Amsterdamse School architecture, folk art, and esotericism.

Art Nouvhoes is an ongoing artistic research project initiated by Limo Hair and Max Bouttell, concerned with archiving, documenting and reflecting on late-19th and early-20th Amsterdam architcture. Their long-term goal is to walk every street in Amsterdam.

All artwork on display is available for purchase directly from the artist. Please get in touch by sending an email or a DM via Instagram.
