Amsterdam School: constructed ideals

Visit our permanent exhibition on the first floor and immerse yourself in the world of the Amsterdam School. This contemporary and interactive exhibition offers a surprising and inspiring experience for visitors of all ages. Through films, mirrors, shadow play, soundscapes and multitouch tables, you’ll step into the imagination, craftsmanship and artistic richness that define this unique movement.

The exhibition highlights the diversity and impact of the Amsterdam School. Architects, artists, city planners, passionate administrators and master craftsmen each contributed to its vision in their own way. Their collaboration resulted in architectural masterpieces known as “workers’ palaces,” such as Het Schip, Het Dageraad and the Scheepvaarthuis. Today, Amsterdam School buildings can still be found and admired throughout the Netherlands.

Rooted in romance, imagination and social ideals, the Amsterdam School was more than an architectural style - it was a movement. Its aim was to bring beauty and art to everyone, not just the elite. This exhibition invites you to explore its rich visual language and its role in uplifting the working class. Though the movement flourished in the early 20th century, it continues to inspire today.

The exhibition showcases highlights from the Museum Het Schip collection, including a complete bedroom set by architect Piet Kramer, and original works by Michel de Klerk such as a lamp, painting and cabinet. You’ll also find sculptures by Hildo Krop, and an entire living room interior designed by De Klerk for 't Woonhuys, on loan from the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and the Amsterdam Museum. Several pieces, including lamps and decorative art objects, are generously provided on long-term loan by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. This exhibition has been made possible through the support of various funds and sponsors.

At Museum Het Schip, the Amsterdam School comes to life in all its beauty and imagination.

The exhibition can be accessed by elevator.
