Because of the national measures concerning the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Museum Het Schip is unfortunately temporarily closed.
The Shipping House (or 'Scheepvaarthuis' in Dutch), is known as one of the first examples of Amsterdam School architecture. Museum Het Schip organizes guided tours on request.
The remarkable Shipping House, which is a national monument since 1974, is a beautiful example of the expressive Amsterdam School style. Famous architects, sculptors and stained glass artists expressed the Dutch shipping history and its related symbolism in the most expensive materials and exquisite details. Therefore, the Shipping House is a "Gesamtkunstwerk" in which the history of the rich Amsterdam shipping life is shown in a 'architecture parlante' (graphic novel in architecture). The exterior of the building brings in mind associations of a moored ship.
Grand Hotel Amrâth not only allows guests of the hotel to admire the interior. During guided tours, organised by Museum Het Schip, art- and culture lovers are given this oppurtunity as well.
Please note that all guided tours are booked including a tasteful arrangement of your choice (tea/coffee and pastry, lunch, drinks & snacks or dinner), offered by Grand Hotel Amrâth.
