About

Social housing in Amsterdam faces two enormous tasks in the very near future. The system needs to make space for a fast growing population, which is more mobile and international orientated than ever. It includes for example refugees, but also young talent looking for employment opportunities.

At the same time drastic technical improvement of the social houses is needed to keep the utility bill of these dwellings on a social level. After all, the increase of electricity prices really threatens the affordability of social houses. Both challenges are being researched but individually and from different disciplines. In this workshop we will explore what happens when these challenges are being studied from an interdisciplinary perspective and in conjunction with each other.

Speakers

The workshop is introduced by two leading speakers:

Wouter Veldhuis
Wouter Veldhuis is director of MUST Urban design (Amsterdam/Cologne), head of Master Urbanism at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design, and board member of Stad-Forum, an advisory board for the municipality of Amsterdam.

During the workshop he will show why post-war neighbourhoods in particular play an important part in the emancipation and development of newcomers in Amsterdam. This simultaneously creates tensions ánd opportunities. Past years newcomers, entrepeneurship and experiment were mostly situated in cheap property, outside the regulations of social housing. However, these freezones become scarce now the pressure on space increases. Consequently, Amsterdam is in danger of losing its signficance as arrival city.

Reimar von Meding
Reimar von Meding is director of architectural bureau KAW and a leading professional on the subject of social housing, renovation and industrial building methods.

During the workshop he will explain the complexity of energetic home improvement and discuss possible strategies for better chain planning of the renovation process. What new opportunities are created when we take into account all uncertainties in a renovation process and encourage a robust planning with more resilience?
