Building Het Schip
Museum Het Schip is located in the world famous workers palace from Michel de Klerk in Amsterdam.
The apartment building on the Spaarndammer-plantsoen by Michel de Klerk, which has been nicknamed Het Schip (the Ship), is renowned worldwide. The building resembles a bizarre art form. Its appearance is unconventional from all angles. The exterior exudes an air of festivity and consists of bright orange bricks, decked with minarets and other highlights. Designed in 1919, the building contains 102 dwellings for the working class, a small meeting hall and a post office. The departure of the post office prompted the Stedelijke Woningdienst [municipal housing authority], Eigen Haard and Stichting de Golf to join forces. Careful restoration made the premises suitable for an information and documentation centre dedicated to the centennial anniversary of the Housing Act.
