A short walk will take you from the main entrance of Museum Het Schip at Spaarndammerplantsoen 140 to the Museumwoning (Museum Residence) on the other side of the building. Originally, there were two residences under De Klerk's world-famous turret. The lower house has been restored to its original state as it was designed by Michel de Klerk. museumwoningsmall.jpg

You can see the original layout, colours and woodwork such as the wainscotting and the cupboards. The occupants were working-class members of the socialist housing association Eigen Haard - people with a low, but regular income. The residence has been furnished with working-class furniture and utensils from the 1920s, many of which are also designed in the style of the Amsterdam School. There used to be a residence of the same type on the first floor. You will now find an exhibition area there, providing information on the background of the Amsterdam School. You can learn more about, for example, the housing associations that commissioned the architects of this movement to build council houses. In the attic you can form an impression of De Klerk's turret.
